Most people associate the name "sunrise" with the time the sun rises in the sky over your head at the start of a new day. This is perhaps why many people think of it as the start of a new day - to be honest, it can be the end of a day too! When you say that sunrise, this usually means the first light visible in the sky over the west coast of North America. As well as being the first, it's also the last time your local time will change. Sunrise is also the point at which the lower limb of the Sun begins to rise in the sky in the morning.
"Sunrise" has a slightly different meaning than what most people use it for though. The term can refer to the whole process of how the solar sphere crosses the horizon and its associated atmospheric effects. For example, it means the time when you see the sun rising over the ocean or the land and the temperature changes with it, even when you're not sitting behind a sundial. If you were sitting on a boat or a plane on a cloudy day, you would probably not notice anything as much as if you were standing on land and looking up.
Some people associate the term "sunrise" with their first glimpse of sunlight in the early evening. This happens when the sun goes down over the ocean or somewhere else in the Pacific Ocean. For the United States, this term means the time when the sun begins to rise again above the water. This is known as a sunset. The sunsets of your trip to Hawaii is one way you can have a sunset at the same time as the sun rises in Hawaii - this is referred to as "sunny beach sunrise". You can find a lot of places that are perfect for sunset photos in Hawaii but most of them have to be taken in the late afternoon or evening when the sun has already gone down.
